Disabling BYTubeD

Previously YouTube used to change things in ways which were easy to adapt to. Now they have started encrypting some portions of the video URLs. And the encryption schemes are sufficiently random to consider the effort of chasing around these changes to be futile, if at all legitimate.

So, highly probably BYTubeD will never be back again in its normal working condition. The development versions on this site will continue to be available, but I have disabled the add-on on addons.mozilla.org.

I do not have any plans to resurrect BYTubeD, given the state of affairs. Programmers who think they have enough time to spend on hacking the encrypted URLs can get the existing code of BYTubeD from here and try to modify it.

Users who still wish to test their luck may try version 1.1.2a2.

AdiĆ³s amigos!

New Development Version - 1.1.2a2

The problem with direct download through 'Enqueue for Download' has been solved (almost). Please install the fix from the link below. In addition to that, an option has been added to suppress the warning displayed when 'Enqueue for Download' is used with more than 5 downloads. See Preferences -> User Interaction.

Problem with 'Enqueue for Download'

Recently there have been some changes in the Firefox extension API. After these changes, the 'Enqueue for Download' option is not working properly. It throws some exceptions and the videos fail to get downloaded. I am working on this problem. Meanwhile please use the 'Generate Links' option and use a download manger such as DownThemAll to actually download the videos.

For this same reason, eventhough the problems caused by YouTube changes (on 19th Dec 2012) have been resolved, I did not upload the fix on amo.mozilla.org and so the users will not receive the fix automatically. Please install the dev-version 1.1.2a1 to get rid of this problem.

New Development Version - 1.1.2a1

Today YouTube changed the way they serve the videos and BYTubeD stopped working for most videos. Please install this new version to get rid of the problem.

New Development Version - 1.0.9a3

Dev-versions Renamed

Firefox is somehow treating 1.0.8a1 and 1.0.8a2 as lower versions than 1.0.8 and soon after installing 1.0.8a1 or 1.0.8a2, it is downgrading BYTubeD to 1.0.8. In order to make Firefox believe that these dev-versions are more recent, 1.0.8a1 has been renamed as 1.0.9a1 and 1.0.8a2 has been renamed as 1.0.9a2.

New Development Version - 1.0.8a2

This new version fixes the issue: "Watch-links file gets generated even when not asked for." Please see the Issues & Fixes section for a download link for 1.0.8a2.

New Development Version - 1.0.8a1

A new development version (1.0.8a1) is up for trying. This version shows Clip Length along with Title and other columns in the section window. Please see the Development section to install the new version.

Site Changes

  • Added RSS feeds for News
  • Added a FaceBook Like button near the description
  • Added ShareThis buttons that float on the left side

New Version - 1.0.8

This is not really a new version in that it does not add any new features above 1.0.7. It just fixes some issues reported with 1.0.7. Rest is just the same.

BYTubeD - Issues in 1.0.7

Please see the Issues & Fixes section.
